Nicholas Kirkwood is a British designer at the forefront of Avant Garde womenswear Footwear, continuously challenging the conventions of design. Kirkwood immediately gained much critical acclaim for his first collection in 2005 of striking, architecturally inspired, sculptural pieces with a blend of genres subverting the relationship between tradition and modernity. Craftsmanship plays an integral role in all of Kirkwood’s collections. His creations focus on the innovation of curvilinear forms. Sharp and considered, Kirkwood’s designs feature unexpected fabrications and techniques with intricate detailing. “I design for a sophisticated woman with an implicit understanding of luxury and has a strong defined vision of herself and her personal style”, Nicholas Kirkwood.

Designer

Nicholas studied at both Central Saint Martins and Cordwainers College. To date, Kirkwood has been granted British Fashion Award for Best Accessory Designer of the Year three times; Footwear News Designer of the Year twice; earned Elle’s Accessory Designer of the Year twice and has been the recipient of the AltaRoma/Vogue Italia award for accessories design. In 2013, Kirkwood received the British Vogue Fashion Fund. This was followed by a successful year which saw Kirkwood launch his first stand-alone men’s collection for AW13, presenting at London Collections: Men in January 2012. Kirkwood has also collaborated alongside established and emerging Ready-to-Wear designers to create show shoes for their runway shows including Erdem, Roksanda, Peter Pilotto, Suno, Rodarte and Fendi. Other creative projects and partnerships include Disney, Samsung, Victoria’s Secret, Keith Haring Foundation and London Fashion Week In May 2011, Kirkwood opened his first flagship boutique on Mount Street in London and the following year opened his first New York based store in the city’s Meatpacking district. His second US based store opened in May 2013 in Wynn Las Vegas & Encore, which was swiftly followed by the launch of his e-commerce site nicholaskirkwood.com where a full range is available including a bespoke service. The brand currently has stores in London, New York, Las Vegas, Paris and Beijing. Nicholas Kirkwood shoes, each 100% hand-crafted in Italy, are currently sold in 40 countries, at 150 leading department and specialty stores, including Le Bon Marché, Saks and Bergdorf Goodman in New York, and Selfridges and Harrods in London.

SPACES IN BETWEEN SPRING SUMMER 2016 Spring Summer 2016 sees Kirkwood’s iconic, signature styles refreshed and emphasised as the epitome of his masterful use of shape, line and form. Bold outlines and sculpted shapes are created and highlighted by the Spaces in Between. The exploration of negative spaces and their positive effects takes inspiration from mirrored architecture, specifically Phillip K Smith III’s Lucid Stead installation. The reflective, interrupted surface creates illusions of camouflage and invisibility, drawing focus to the surrounding shapes and abstract presence of the wood cabin. Kirkwood reinterprets this concept accentuating silhouettes and textures through negative spaces. Focus is given to both the shoe and its absence to give a thought provoking, striking collection. Kirkwood’s Eyeliner and Fineliner groups centre on defined outlines with heavy boarders morphing into shapes. Symmetric patterns in Eyeliner are fabricated in black and turquoise suede and printed leather. Fineliner’s slim lines on delicate mesh give a reverberating effect and curvilinear upper designs create a sculptural fluidity for a sophisticated finish. The strong monochromatic scheme of patent black and silver add a rebellious tone. The Outliner group applies blocks of vibrant colour to create the boundaries of sharp shapes.
